While researching this company I found several online postings saying it's a scam. At any rate, it's certainly a marketing ploy, like the official-looking letters I get offering to renew and "protect" my domain name for 10x what I'm currently paying. If I wanted to register my domain in China, I could just do it. I think I'll skip it, though.

I received the same email as well. Mr. Mellon has cranked up his marketing methods and is being quite persistent and assertive. Sure hope this is a scam. Has anyone figured out the potential damage if it is for real?
Bergman on 08 Dec 2008 at 2:06 am #
If you care about the Chinese market, you can register your trademark with the USPTO (USPTO.gov) (official fees about $275) and then, within six months, have a Chinese attorney register it in China.
In any event, the telephone number offered above appears to be Beijing, but the whois database lists Hong Kong (without providing street address information). Likely a scam.
Yianniskon on 09 Dec 2008 at 3:45 am #
I received exactly the same mail by some Mr. Slim. After I refused to register, he kept insisting saying that even if I give up the protection of my domain names, I should protect my Internet Brand. His message said “I hope you are aware of importance of Internet Brand which is a kind of network brand and a stretch of brand which can protect the right of real trademark from being infringed. Internet Brand keyword is real-world brand’s extension in the network”. The message came from the following supposed organization:

I know this is probably a scam. Does anyone have any information about this Internet Brand keyword. Does something like that exist?
Robert on 09 Dec 2008 at 9:06 am #
Dear Yianniskon,
Your “Internet Brand” is, essentially, your online reputation. Someone (maybe even this company?) could register your domain name in another country and use it for any purpose, potentially undermining your brand. Someone could also register it and try to sell it to you at a higher price than the going rate (aka cybersquatting). It’s worth protecting your brand in countries where you do, or plan to do, business. But the Internet Brand Safety & Justice Dept is only one of many domain name registrars. I don’t do, or plan to do, business in China, so I am ignoring this “offer.”

Seems that the guys at the Internet Brand Safety & Justice Dept. are doign an excellent job of identifying so many organizations that have been trying to register under various company names. I received a message from Mr. Thomas Mellon advising me that another organization was trying to register under our corporate brand name.
Mind you – the person who thought this scam up should receive top marks… it is musch more convincing than the Nigerian money scam.

Lawrence,
I don’t see this as a scam like a Nigerian money fraud (aka 419 scams). For all I know, they’re offering a genuine service (although no one has posted saying they’re a happy client). But it’s a service that most of us don’t need — I don’t. And if I did, I’m confident I could get it elsewhere for less.
Judging by the number of views this post has received, they’ve certainly spammed a lot of people with their offer. I hope most recipients do their research before deciding they need it.

Robert on 14 Jan 2009 at 9:16 am #
Dear Pina,
If you do business in China or want to protect your domain names there, you might really want to register those domains. But you should shop around to make sure you’re paying a fair price. I did a quick search and found some registrars charging about $20 per domain (and many charging a lot more). Their web site doesn’t even say what NameBrandSolutions charges.

Dear Robert,
thanks a lot for posting this, coming from Europe I hadn’t come accross this until now. But it looks pretty creative to “invent” an Internet Brand which doesn’t exist and doesn’t work either. You’re right, it’s like the registration offers you get for tons of “copyright index”, “trademark monitor”, etc. – I knew to put these away immediately, now I am glad to know this one is for the recycle bin as well (maybe even delete it from there immediately as well ….
)
Kind regards

Subject: Dispute the kawasumiamerica company’s domain name
Dear Manager,
We received a formal application from a person who is called William Ball is applying to register “kawasumiamerica” as their domain names and Internet brand in Hong Kong and also in Asia on Aug 27, 2009. During our auditing procedure we find out that the alleged William Ball has no trade mark, brand nor patent even similar to that word. As authorized anti-cybersquatting organization we hereby suspect the alleged William Ball to be a domain or trademark grabber. Hence we need you confirmation for two things, First of all, whether this alleged William Ball is your business partner or distributor in Asia.
Secondly, whether you are interested in registering these domains and Internet brand instead of that alleged person.(The alleged William Ball will be entitled to obtain a domain not needed by original trademark owner.)
If you are not in charge of this please forward this email to appropriate dept.
This is a letter for confirmation. If the mentioned third party is your business partner or distributor in Asia and you are not interested in register these domains and Internet brand please DO NOT reply. We will automatically confirm application from your business partner after this audit procedure.

Thank you for all your posts. We have just found out its a SCAM!

Please have a read below and if you have received the same mail just ignore it and happily go on with your life!
Dear CEO & Principal,
We are a domain name registration and dispute organization in Asia, which mainly deal with the global companies’ domain name & internet keyword registration and Internet intellectual property right protection. Currently, we have a pretty important issue needing to confirm with your company.

Here’s the follow up:
Dear CEO & Principal,
Thanks for your timely reply.
If you have no relationship with them. according to our working experience, there are 3 possibilities:
1: PHDLOW company is a domain name investment company, they want to cybersquat these domain names and then sell back to you to gain profits.
2: It may be a commercial method, PHDLOW company is consigned by your competitor to register, make your clients confused.
3: PHDLOW company may be the biggest competitor of you in Asian regions or European regions who wants to invade your Asian regions or European regions market and confuse your clients as well as to disturb your website and bring harm to the profit of your company.
According to our specific auditing now, we knew you have registered the domain name ” xxxxxxxx.com ” and own the trademark ” xxxxxxxx”, this is why we informed you. But now PHDLOW company wanted to apply for other domain names and internet keyword you have not registered yet. Because domain name takes open registration, this is international domain name registration principle. So PHDLOW company has right to register it. As a domain name registrar, we have no right to dispute their application. So required by China government to inform your company to protect your interest.
Following are all the domain names and internet keyword which are submitted by PHDLOW company:
1. Domain Names:
xxxxxxxx.asia
xxxxxxxx.hk
xxxxxxxx.tw
xxxxxxxx.sg
xxxxxxxx.my
2. Internet Keyword:
XXXXXXXX
As the owner of the brand of ” xxxxxxxx”, you will get the priority to register these domain names and internet keyword. Of course, each company has their own idea. If you think their registration will confuse your clients and harm your intellectual property rights & trademark, we can send the disputed application form to you and help you register these names within dispute period, this is the best and only way to stop these domains and internet keyword from being grabbed. If you don’t think their application will affect your company, you can give up, we will finish their registration.
Please get your decision ASAP, so that we can handle the next step.
Waiting for your reply ASAP.
Kind Regards,
Allen ya

“I speak of your uncle, you are a chop suey, OK? Hell you are a slut, Death, dogs on the East and West, inserted inside the root of your nose red onion want the elephant ah? You are a silly B OK?”
I have to admit, I enjoyed reading these posts concerning the scam. Hopefully, no one fell for it!
Our scam letter was like most others and included this:
1. Is this” PLDYInternational, Inc ” your Asian agent or branch here?
Waiting for your reply ASAP.

I get these “chinese are going to tale your domain name” often. In the begining I frantically called my hosting company and they assured me there was no way this could happen. Here’s the next variartion. Notice they stress that if you want to allow this the DO NOT REPLY….
Dear Manager,
We received a formal application from a person who is called Brian Ball is applying to register “itimaging” as their domain names and Internet brand in Hong Kong and also in Asia on Nov 13, 2009. During our auditing procedure we find out that the alleged Brian Ball has no trade mark, brand nor patent even similar to that word. As authorized anti-cybersquatting organization we hereby suspect the alleged Brian Ball to be a domain or trademark grabber. Hence we need you confirmation for two things, First of all, whether this alleged Brian Ball is your business partner or distributor in Asia.
Secondly, whether you are interested in registering these domains and Internet brand instead of that alleged person.(The alleged Brian Ball will be entitled to obtain a domain not needed by original trademark owner.)
Best Regards,
Eddy
