Facebook Causes: Not a Cash Cow (Yet)

The recent analysis of giving through Facebook Causes by The Washington Post was not encouraging. It found that only a fraction of the 179,000 nonprofits that signed up for the Causes application have brought in even $1000, and only two have brought in over $100,000. A recent survey published by NTEN, Common Knowledge, and ThePort [...]

Jakob Nielsen Thinks Your Web Site Sucks

Well, maybe it doesn’t exactly suck, but potential donors can’t figure it out. In a recent study of nonprofit Web sites, usability guru Jakob Nielsen asked participants "what information they want to see on nonprofit Web sites before they decide whether to donate?" The most heavily requested information was:

Analysis of Convio’s Online Fundraising Study

Care2’s Allyson Kapin just published an analysis of Convio’s online fundraising study (which I mentioned earlier this week). She interviewed me, so of course I think the article is good. But in particular, check out the advice from online marketing consultant Katy O’Neal about how nonprofits should focus their marketing and engagement efforts. [...]

Convio’s 2009 Online Fundraising Benchmark Report

Convio has released a new online fundraising benchmark report that is based on data from 600 of Convio’s nonprofit clients from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2008.
The study reports:

Positive year-over-year growth in all of the key areas of online success. Compared to 2007, results for online fundraising were up 14 [...]

Do New Online Donors Give Again?

A new study released by Blackbaud’s Target Analytics division suggests that first-time online donors do not become recurring donors. The study of 24 national nonprofits found that people who make a first-time gift online often don’t make subsequent online gifts to the charity (although some give through other means).
The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s coverage of the [...]

Razoo: A Free Online Donation Service

I recently posted a notice that Google is limiting its free online donation service to Google grant recipients. Subsequently, TechSoup member schobert suggested checking out Razoo for Nonprofits. I looked at the service and spoke with Razoo’s CEO, Sebastian Traeger, last week and learned the following:

Razoo is using Guidestar to list nonprofits and [...]

Google Checkout No Longer Free for Nonprofits

Google has been offering free donation processing to nonprofits for the past couple of years through Google Checkout. That free service will end on March 1 except for U.S.-based nonprofits that receive Google Grants. Other nonprofits will pay 2% + $0.20 per transaction (but at least there won’t be any monthly, setup, or gateway service [...]

Using Humiliation to Fundraise

Trend or coincidence? Twice in the past week I’ve come across online fundraising campaigns in which the fundraiser promises to do something embarrassing when the goal is met.

Last week, Holly Ross, NTEN’s Executive Director, posted a video appeal for her attempt to raise $10,000 for scholarships to the upcoming Nonprofit Technology Conference. If she meets [...]

Fundraising via Social Media: Pros and Cons

I’ve already mentioned Beth Kanter’s extensive discussion of Twestival, an attempt to raise $500,000 for the group charity:water using Twitter. Beth titled her post Are Fundraising Groundswells A Massive Opportunity or Distraction for Nonprofit Organizations? and didn’t reach a conclusion either way.

Hildy Gottlieb takes the con side in her post Avoiding the Siren’s Song [...]

Twestival: Trying to raise $500,000 through Twitter

Beth Kanter wrote an extensive, thoughtful account of the upcoming Twestival event, which aims to raise $500,000 for the group charity:water.

As a fundraising operations geek, I wonder how this works on the back end. Will the Twestival organizers send tax receipts to the donors, or will that fall to charity:water? I hope it’s [...]
